HV042 Endless Melancholy - The Vacation

CD/DL: hiddenvibes.bandcamp.com/album/the-vacation
TAPE/DL: pantheophania.bandcamp.com/album/the-vacation

Pleasant warmth of summer reflected from grainy surfaces of sound, unfolded once from pages of old book... Radiating through space & time, entering the minds of lazy dreamers, sleepless readers and helpless slackers, hovering behind the dark windows of those nights, when city feels abandoned... The story once whispered changed many forms but still returned to inspire, to bring this feeling of inevitable elusiveness of everything we love and care.

~ In memory of Ray Bradbury ~

"The Vacation" is a fifth album by Endless Melancholy. It is a follow up to project's rather acclaimed full-length "Her Name In A Language Of Stars", released back in 2015. "The Vacation" was lovingly crafted over the span of two months, processed through the vintage reel-to-reel tape recorder for some analog warmth and received a thoughtful master from Stephan Mathieu at Schwebung Mastering studio. Wonderful artwork was created by Lita Akhmetova. The album will be released on 27 June, 2017 via Hidden Vibes (CD + digital) and ΠΑΝΘΕΟΝ (tape + digital).

Reviews:

The album starts with “They had wakened one morning and the world was empty” which sonicly gives you a visual image not to dissimilar to the end of the movie “28 Days Later” where you see people surrounded by absolutely nothing but the raw environment and not a person to be sighted. This is summed up in the tracks title, but also the feel of the track as it opens with fierce wind like noise, melodic drones and various layers of other drones that balances each other out. Some provide the higher notes while some function as almost a bass like rhythm section for the higher notes to float over. Some low-level piano keys are visible that provide a haunting element, but it is the drones that give the track its isolation feel. // Drifting, Almost Falling

Even more so than its predecessor, it evokes a sense of cosmic wonder and vast, otherworldly vistas while being anchored to a strong emotional undertow which lends it the haunting poignancy that makes it so compelling. Best experienced as a complete journey from start to finish, there are some individual standout moments, with tender stillness at the heart of “Wouldn’t We Be Lonely” and the transcendent, palatial slow build of “Enough to Cost Us a Lifetime” being arguably among the most striking. // Stationary Travels

Oleksiy Sakevych has produced another winner. The Vacation is his fifth full-length disc under the Endless Melancholy brand. It is this month’s must-listen.

After the success of 2015’s Her Name In A Language Of Stars, expectations have ridden pretty high ahead of this new release. Despite the Kiev-based artist’s self-deprecating insistence that he’s been “disappointing everyone since 2011,” it’s hard to imagine many listeners having that reaction to The Vacation.

The album is achingly beautiful. He matches gentle, mournful ambient synth with some of the most effective distortion effects recorded this year. Sakevych may have an album of the year here. // Kevin Press

«Earth was now no more than a meadow» дает наиболее космическую и научно-фантастическую картинку. «Enough to cost us a lifetime» — наиболее светлая вещь на альбоме, а заканчивается лонгплей на мрачной и зловещей ноте трека «And he walked her through the still and empty city streets». // Neformat

Swaddled in lovely layers, Endless Melancholy sculpts a soothing world with “The Vacation”. Elegantly combining drone and classical into something so serene, Endless Melancholy employs a great variety of textures throughout the album. At the very heart of these magnificent pieces is a keen ear for melody which guides the pieces along with great power. By opting for an approach that appears firmly grounded in emotion rather than any other distinction, the songs simply wash over the listener. // Beach Sloth

// Music Won't Save You

Zojuist is zijn nieuwste album The Vacation verschenen.

Oleksiy Sakevych focuses on the heartache. His compositions are drenched in static, like abraded signals, the detritus of broadcasts and interstellar transmissions. There’s no one left. This is the last time these wonders will be seen through human eyes. Was it God or man that caused the catastrophe ~ and was this deserved? Should the family attempt to repopulate, or live out their life span? The sub-surface melodies are respectful yet forlorn, an elegy to the lost.

The family trundles on, adopting a trolley as their means of transportation. The world rushes by, but not that quickly. There’s still enough time to appreciate what remains ~ sunflowers, meadows, “stillness mixed with stillness.” Yet there is also love, as intimated by the piano, which takes its time to appear and plays only plaintive notes; and in the fitting cover art by Lita Akhmetova, which wraps the family in a halo. Why hurry when there is all the time in the world? // A Closer Listen

I’m not trying to make you cry -- I promise -- but if you want to feel any emotion close to the ‘elated’ end of the scale, this isn’t the music for you. Having said that… For an album packed with glacial synths drenched in tape hiss and half-speed Mogwai-ish melodies, it’s very nice. Those synths swoop in, then soar high and drift away toward the endless horizon. Not the sort of sound indicative of a clear day; on planet Endless Melancholy there is always a thick, fluffy bed of white cloud obscuring everything. It’s also a highly icy sound, which may console you on a future sweltering day like we’ve all enjoyed lately… right? // Norman Records
